Fake Racing: Traverse City's Speed of Light

We're pretty excited for Thursday. Sure, weekends are the time for big, long impressive rides, but anyone who has ever hopped into Speed of Light knows that 40 minutes can be plenty hard, too.

Each Thursday night from mid-May through mid-September, Traverse City hits the Vasa Pathway for the famous Speed of Light ride. The 11.7 mile route belies just how tough, and how fun, the ride can be for riders of all abilities. From 38 minutes to an hour, and everywhere in between riders challenge each other and themselves over weekly, monthly, and even season-long competitions.

up.bike is proud to be a supporter of the event, which also sees dozens of youth riders join the fray with miniSOL, which starts after school ends. Both SOL and miniSOL are a lesson in how to grow a group ride. For years, SOL was often just a handful of riders, sometimes just five or six making it for the ride. Now, we're expecting over 60 riders, and another forty kids once they get involved early next month!

Nothing brings a community like a consistent group rides, and it's vital to the fabric of that community that these rides happen. We love being a part of these local events, and with Speed of Light finally starting, it really feels like summer. You can follow up.bike and Speed of Light all summer long at kolo t.c. We'll make sure to keep you up to date on the best performances, and loads of other stuff we've got planned in the next few months.
